A true fact about bats is that they eat around 1200 mosquito’s per hour. This gives them a reputation for being the best bug killers in the world.

Myth number #2 “Blind as a Bat” - bats can see perfectly fine. They just can’t see as well at night as they can during the day. Bats use ‘echolocation’ to catch their food. Echolocation is emitting high pitched sounds that bounce off insects up to 30 feet away. They take the info, which also tells them the size of the insect, and they use it to calculate exactly where the insect will be and where to intercept it.

The number of bats that carry the rabies virus is relatively low compared to the actual number of bats in Ontario. If you encounter a bat in your home or work place treat it as though it is rabid and call a professional to have it removed. The bat can be sent off for testing if you suspect it has bitten a person or a pet.
